Our BaSIS programme works towards providing the basic infrastructure and materials necessary for developing education. This is the foundation of all our work at HELP; without these fundamental requirements learning cannot take place, and in many of our villages this has meant starting from scratch. This involves rebuilding schools, toilets and accomodation for teachers, along with supplying the classroom materials and furniture which were lost during the earthquake. Achieving these basic goals is crucial for the fulfilment of our other programs aimed at improving education in the region.
In the wake of the 2015 earthquake, we are working with our partner villages to build:
Government provision of both infrastructure and equipment is consistently poor owing to small budgets and high levels of corruption. In some areas we may be installing the first sanitation a village has seen, or providing them with drinking water for the first time. This kind of infrastructure reduces absenteeism in school by reducing journey times to collect water, and keeping kids healthy allows them to attend school more often. Items such as school uniform may seem inconsequential compared to some of the other resources we supply, but these are a necessity for children to attend school in Nepal.
A relatively small amount can make a large difference in Nepal, due to the low cost of materials and labour. Please donate to help us provide the children of Helambu with the building blocks of education.
